There are five stages of development according to Tuckman’s model and each stage has a different meaning from the other stages, for instance there is the Forming stage, Storming stage, Norming stage, Performing stage, and Adjourning stage. I can recall a time that I and my co-workers were discussing a sensitive topic and into the discussion the first stage of Tuckman’s model we encountered was the Forming stage where we started to interact with each other and began asking questions laid down our rules that we shall follow and see who the best person was to lead this conversation, {Clockify, 2020}.

Each of us was a part of an exercise where new ideas and opinions were formulated and after attending these sessions while in the forming stage, we were told that we had to put together three different types of learning experiences that we could help other co-workers with the management of rehabilitation clients on the job.

This was no easy task so we began to determine who was best for the job ahead and what role they would play within the rehabilitation process, being that this assignment must be completed by a certain time frame. While we are in the storming stage of development, competitiveness, healthy or unhealthy, conflict might start between members and within this stage which is more combative than the others being that brainstorming start to develop where everyone has different types of working styles, and they will bump heads with each other because each member has their own idea and opinion about the topic/task. Being that new ideas and opinions are given within this stage some members disagreed what ideas were being discussed therefore, smaller groups were created where members would come up with their ideas and then present it to the other members for their feedback and this is where personalities and the working style of each person comes to fruition during this stage.

Finally, once we were able to stop the arguing and disagreements within the group and focus on our assignment considered the Norming stage the group members can regroup start to put our assignment into reality however, there were moments where some members of the group would disagree, and this brought us ack to the Storming stage.

During the Performing stage which is the progress the members confidence increase, roles and task seem to be more valid and after we agreed on the best approach to bring to the rehabilitation council we explored what we were researching and everything was

 

 

as expected and we put the interactive activities into action whereas, many of our clients have learning disabilities due to their drug addiction as well as speech impairment.

We encountered problems presenting this topic, but we overcame everything, and the program started using our services and as of today the services are being utilized within the Rehabilitation department. The final stage is Adjourning reflecting on the completion of the group task and celebrating the success we achieved for our first time with a large group, and this will be reoccurring due to new ideas and opinions will have to be given since the rehabilitation department is always active and running and I can see my group using the development model next.

The best example I must explain Tuckman’s Model of Group Development was my Flight during Officer Training School. The Flight was put together randomly and included both males and females. We had a range of ages, experiences, and backgrounds. The group had approximately 15 members, and we worked together all day, every day.

Tuckman’s model of group development includes five stages that occur in order (Adams & Galanes, 2021). In the forming stage, limits are tested, acceptable conduct is identified, basic rules are established, and relationships with group leaders and other members are built (Natvig & Stark, 2016). During this phase, my flight was forming first impressions, getting to know each other, and trying to begin to understand their tasks and goals. Our first student Flight Leader was Cadet Eddie. He took on the role immediately and did a great job of swiftly pulling the Flight together. Flight members quickly became comfortable turning to him for questions or concerns.

The second stage of Tuckman’s model is the storming phase. In this phase, group members begin voicing their opinions, and conflict starts to occur (Adams & Galanes, 2021). Our flight did not spend much time in this phase, but we did have a short time where there was a lot of tension as we learned how best to work with each other. Sometimes, some flight members would not like a solution that had been decided on, or

 

 

they preferred to do something differently. Different values and backgrounds became an area of contention quickly as things were said that were offensive to others. These issues caused us to fail our first few challenges.

Next is the norming phase. This phase is when everything seems to come together. The conflict that was present during the storming stage changes to a willingness to work together and a desire for unity (Natvig & Stark, 2016). During this phase, our Flight really started to work together. We discovered each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we learned to leverage them to our advantage. We became accepting and open to those that came from a different background or had different values than us. We began to trust and rely on each other. During this stage, we passed our first challenge, which gave us a massive boost of confidence as a team.

During the performance, group members can collaborate efficiently (Adams & Galanes, 2021). The accomplishment of tasks becomes the group’s primary concern (Natvig & Stark, 2016). Our Flight began successfully completing all our challenges. We started shifting into our roles without even having to discuss it. During this phase, one Flight member was very close to failing a test. If he failed, he would have been sent home. Our Flight spent the entire night helping him study to ensure that he passed the test and got to continue. We became very protective of and proud of our Flight.

The last stage, adjourning, was added to the model in 1977 and occurs as members prepare to leave the group (Natvig & Stark, 2016). The group examines and analysis their performance and experience, as well as the outcome of the assignment (Natvig & Stark, 2016). During this stage, our Flight reflected on our time at Officer Training School and what we had learned. We also considered the friendship we had formed and how much we had grown from working with the people in our Flight. Our Flight had become like a second family. Many of us agreed to stay in touch with each other, and most have.

There are five steps in Tuckman’s model of group development which include forming, happens at the first meeting and first impressions are made; storming, happens as group members begin discussing the group’s task and everyone gives their point of view; norming, the group has established how it is going to operate and group members know about the skills and abilities of each other; performing, the group has made it through the other stages and members work together confidently to reach the group’s goal; adjourning, the group has met its goal, the group members decide if they will stay in touch as they begin to disband the group (Adams & Galanes, 2021).

The first small group experience that came to mind when reading the discussion prompt was when I planned events with family. A get-together for a holiday or birthday requires planning and everyone must gather to decide on what will happen during the event, what will be served for lunch/dinner, who will bring what, and when the event will happen. The forming happens when my stepmother calls or texts everyone to meet at her house on a specific day. We meet up and greet each other and start talking about the upcoming event. The storm happens when the inevitable arguing starts about what we should serve and what games we should plan for. Usually, my stepmother wins these arguments. The norming stage happens when everyone agrees on who will be best for each task and who would do better overseeing bringing specific items. The performing stage happens on the day of the event, everyone has gathered, and the event is going smoothly, everyone is having a good time and enjoying spending time together. Adjourning happens at the end, everyone says goodbye and promises to call sometime later in the week.

When the family or group members work together, they can reduce the amount of work for each member, individual members are more likely to contribute to areas where they are strongest, and the people who attend the event will be able to enjoy it more if the performing stage goes as planned. When teams work together, they are more effective, innovative, and the end goal can be achieved if all team motives are understood (Kumar et al., 2014)
